The next service requirement has been issued for Monday 24 January, between 6:30pm and 7:30pm for those participating in their supplier’s scheme. How will the off-peak energy scheme work? The aim of the scheme is to save 2GW, enough to power about 600,000 homes. National Grid plans to use the scheme at least 12 times, even if there are no energy shortages, to encourage people to take part.īritish Gas, one of the UK’s biggest suppliers says it will also triple this saving, so if National Grid pays you £3 then customers will get £9. The final demand flexibility day is on 23 March 2023.īill payers will get £3 per kilowatt hour, if they avoid high-power activities, such as cooking, when demand is high. Consumers with smart meters will be notified the day before and will be paid for using power outside these periods. National Grid has also launched a “demand flexibility service” that will encourage businesses and consumers to use power outside peak demand periods such as 9-11am and early evenings on weekdays until 31 March 2023. Such an event would see consumers in different parts of the country being notified a day in advance and told their power would be switched off, in an effort to reduce total consumption by 5%. Its Electricity System Operator (ESO) has warned that if Vladimir Putin shuts off gas supplies from Russia and temperatures suddenly drop, households could face blackouts of up to three hours at a time.
